In August 1992, Tony stabbed himself in the heart after his wife came home with another man. In the emergency room, he flat-lined twice. During one episode, he was floating in darkness and could hear every detail of the doctor's words, though he saw nothing. He experienced being outside his body with heightened awareness, feeling freedom and confusion in the void. Time had no meaning during the experience. Despite the darkness, he felt awake for the first time, experiencing relief, calmness, and happiness. He felt no longer in conflict with nature. The doctor later expressed surprise at Tony's survival, stating he didn't save him and wasn't sure how he survived. The experience transformed Tony's religious beliefs from uncertainty to absolute certainty about God's existence, though he was initially angry at God. He now has no fear of death, knowing he was "more alive than ever" while dead. The darkness aspect troubles him as few discuss this type of NDE.
