On October 22, 2010, Thomas had a femoropopliteal bypass surgery and experienced cardiac arrest the next morning at 7:30 AM. After being helped to a chair by a nurse, his eyeballs rolled back and he heard the nurse repeatedly saying "Mr. Thomas, please do not do this to me." He then found himself in a beautiful room filled with gorgeous white light, feeling love, comfort, and no pain. Before him was a stone bed with white sheets and three stone steps. A powerful force prevented him from climbing into the bed. A voice from the light said, "Thomas, you have lived a good life, but I have something even more important for you to do. I do not want you now." He then heard his daughter yelling on the phone and saw a nurse hitting his chest calling for paddles. The doctor shouted "He is alive!" and rushed him to surgery. He later learned his lungs had collapsed and he had flat-lined. The experience gave him peace, increased patience and compassion, and certainty about the afterlife. He feels he is waiting for a sign about his important purpose.
