On April 24, 2002, Tammie accidentally shot herself in the left abdomen while in a delusional state from prescription drug interactions. She bled out in the ambulance with no pulse or breathing. During clinical death, she witnessed her body being worked on while simultaneously observing her brother threatening her husband with a gun in their car driving to the hospital. She was carried by an invisible being toward a beautiful glowing island city with vivid colors and no sun. A voice expressed sorrow about the pain her death would cause, and she mouthed "I'm sorry," which the paramedic witnessed despite her not breathing. During surgery, she experienced a second NDE involving a cold, dark tunnel with water on the walls leading downward to a hellish place with people reaching up. She was told she would return and had been shown both afterlife destinations. Upon awakening in ICU, she asked for her brother, and he later confirmed exactly what she had witnessed about threatening her husband. The experience transformed her spiritual understanding and eliminated her fear of death.
