Tam experienced severe complications during triple bypass surgery with hemoglobin dropping to 4, a "floppy" heart, and cardiac arrest lasting nearly 25 minutes. She was five minutes from cessation of resuscitation efforts. During this crisis, she had an atypical OBE where she found herself on a separate operating table in the same OR suite, on the same plane rather than floating above. She could see the surgical procedure occurring distantly but felt completely disinterested. Her deceased grandfather appeared beside her, appearing younger and healthier than when he died, holding her hand and assuring her she would be okay. Though she wore no glasses and is normally blind without them, she could see clearly. Three more deceased relatives visited - two teasing uncles whose presence she sensed but couldn't see, communicating without words, and her estranged father who nervously requested to wait with her. She chose to have her grandfather stay instead. The experience was extraordinarily vivid and lucid. Upon waking in intensive care, she immediately told everyone about her grandfather's visit. She learned three days later about the severity of her cardiac complications during surgery. The experience has made her fearless about death.
