Five-year-old Sue drowned at a lake when her foot became caught underwater while pretending to drown as a game with her grandmother. After initial panic and struggle, she felt warm and pleasantly calm, having given in without fear. She experienced a rapid life review with flashbacks of past events, then saw an intensely bright flashing white light that surrounded her while she moved forward within it. She heard only a loud humming sound but felt someone's presence, though not fearful. The light was brilliant white, bursting forth but not hurting her eyes to look at. She was revived on the beach by a woman who pulled her out and resuscitated her, with people including her mother surrounding her. The incident was never discussed in their home. Sue initially told people aliens had grabbed her foot, using childhood imagination to process the experience. She didn't realize others had similar experiences until seeing a movie about NDEs as a teenager. The experience left her without fear of death, with strong belief in God and heaven, and with unusual empathy toward others. She became extremely compassionate, feeling others' sadness even as a young child, including guilt about enjoying things like Christmas presents when other children had none.
