On October 25, 1997, Sheree participated in a Yale New Haven hospital research study for women successfully treated for postpartum depression. After receiving medication that caused dizziness and nausea, she blacked out while driving the next day and was hit head-on by a pickup truck. She had to be cut from the car and rushed to hospital where she underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured spleen, requiring its removal and exploratory surgery. She suffered multiple fractures including right clavicle, three ribs, left fibula, and right foot bone.
During the experience, Sheree saw a bright light 1,000 times brighter than the sun. As its rays shone down on her, she felt overwhelming peace, love, serenity, safety, belonging, and a sense of being home. The feeling was awesome and beyond description. She remembers only this brilliant light experience before waking up in the hospital with surgical staples, initially angry with God for allowing her to experience such splendor only to send her back in damaged condition. Though initially distressed about returning from the perfect peace, Sheree eventually understood God wanted her to share this testimony. She recognized God as the bright light she encountered and felt His love directly. The experience completely eliminated her fear of death and made her life more meaningful. She became more compassionate and respectful toward others, with increased sensitivity to the Holy Spirit's guidance. Following the accident, Sheree faced severe consequences from prescribed pain medication, becoming addicted and eventually turning to heroin. She lost her home, marriage, children, and became homeless. Now in recovery, she believes God allowed this additional suffering so she could relate to all people without prejudice. She sees both her NDE and subsequent addiction journey as part of God's plan for her testimony.
