In March 1975, Shea experienced a severe car accident with life-threatening injuries that doctors believed she wouldn't survive. She has no memory of the accident itself but suddenly became aware she was dying. She felt quiet, peaceful, and located somewhere outside her body. Without emotion, she acknowledged she was dying but then remembered her one-year-old son and began praying, telling God she couldn't die because she had a baby to raise.
Then a beautiful voice from Heaven spoke directly to her, saying "Shea, you're not going to die." She described it as the most beautiful voice she had ever heard - indescribable but unmistakable, one she would recognize when hearing it again. After hearing this divine message, she felt more than peace - absolute wonder. She had a vision of her husband on a table in the hospital and knew he would be fine. She felt happy and wonderful. Suddenly she experienced a rush back to awareness of her body, now crying out in pain and fighting medical personnel. On the way to surgery, barely able to breathe, she managed to tell her father "Jesus said I wouldn't die." Her father backed away and looked at her in amazement. She spent a week in ICU and another week hospitalized before returning home. The experience transformed Shea's faith journey profoundly. She spent years searching for the right church, moving through various Protestant denominations before becoming Catholic eight years ago. She developed a deep relationship with what she calls the "Infinite Way" and gained absolute certainty about God's existence. Her fear of death disappeared completely, and she developed heightened spiritual sensitivity, experiencing similar divine presence twice more in her life.
