During an elective appendectomy in 1965, 13-year-old Sara woke up mid-surgery vomiting with impaired breathing. The anesthesiologist replaced the mask but she felt like breathing water and lost consciousness. She then found herself out of body, observing three doctors trying to revive her from above. A dark vortex appeared overhead and she noticed small, dark beings in 2-3 groups who were aware of her presence but did not approach. She felt curious but not alarmed by these strange beings.
Sara observed herself slowly moving toward the vortex and intuitively understood there was a distance limit for returning to her body. She watched the doctors panicking over her body below and could see both the medical scene and the otherworldly elements simultaneously. The beings appeared as groups of what looked like little monks, and the vortex seemed to attract her but not them. She sensed a boundary or point of no return approaching. After deciding to return due to uncertainty about crossing the limit, the experience immediately ended. She later learned she had suffered cardiac arrest requiring CPR and defibrillation, confirming the severity of her medical crisis. Medical staff initially dismissed her experience as an anesthesia-induced nightmare when she tried to share it. The experience eliminated Sara's fear of death and led her to become more spiritual though less religious. She developed precognitive dreams and gained certainty that consciousness exists outside the body. Years later, learning about NDEs validated her experience. She maintains that while consciousness clearly survives bodily death, what lies beyond the vortex remains a mystery.
