Samuel C experienced a severe heart attack (inferior myocardial infarction) in February 1976. Awakening at 2 AM with intense thirst, he went to get water from the kitchen but was struck by severe pain in his shoulders, back, and arms. After drawing water at the sink, he collapsed to the floor. His condition deteriorated over several days in the hospital with increasing shortness of breath, intense pain in what he thought was his solar plexus but was actually the pulmonary artery, and loss of appetite before the critical event occurred.
During his near-death experience, Samuel found himself walking through a tunnel that appeared more like an arboretum with light filtering through intermittently. The tunnel led to a brightly lit grassy area. Upon reaching this area, he turned and began walking toward an extremely bright light that didn't hurt his eyes. A beautiful feminine voice then told him "you can't go on; they say you have more to do," much to his disappointment as he very much wanted to continue toward the light. The most profound aspect occurred when Samuel found himself near the ceiling of his kitchen, looking down at his own body lying on the floor. He was accompanied by an unseen presence that he knew with absolute certainty was God. He felt the most powerful, indescribable love both for his body below and for the divine entity present with him. The voice repeated that he had "more to do," and feeling this divine authority, he agreed and descended back toward his body, entering through the back of his ear. Samuel awakened in severe pain and crawled on hands and knees to wake his wife, who called paramedics. His condition was so critical that the doctor advised his wife to call their son from New York, not expecting Samuel to survive. However, Samuel felt confident about his survival because of the divine message he had received. He was later assigned to a premier hematologist and recovered, returning home for Christmas. He interpreted his life purpose as sharing this experience with others, particularly to comfort those facing death, which he has done ever since.
