R.A. experienced a near-death event in 1984 when he was overcome and choked by a jealous girlfriend, having not taken her threats seriously until it was too late. He lost touch with earthly reality very quickly as he succumbed to asphyxiation, but his consciousness continued in a remarkable way. The experience began with a comprehensive life review, where he rapidly re-experienced his life's events like watching a movie, except he was inside the movie, reliving the moments rather than merely observing them. This immersive replay of his entire life happened with extraordinary speed and clarity.
Following the life review, R.A. experienced something similar to the commonly reported tunnel phenomenon, though for him it felt more as if the tunnel came to him rather than him traveling through it. He saw a circle of light that quickly grew in size until he was completely inside it. Once within the light, he became aware of its intense brightness, far exceeding any earthly light he had known. The light seemed to emanate from a sun so massive it covered most of the sky. Within this realm of light, he was joined by a friend who had died approximately six months earlier. Their interaction felt remarkably similar to those they had shared on Earth, maintaining the familiar quality of their friendship despite the otherworldly setting. The emotional and spiritual dimensions of the experience were profound. R.A. felt completely filled with acceptance, forgiveness, and love, with a total absence of negative feelings such as hatred or revenge. This state of pure positive emotion and spiritual clarity left a lasting impression. Then he became aware of returning to his body, experiencing quivering and shaking as he regained earthly consciousness. He likened the experience to having lived his entire life in a bubble at the bottom of a dark ocean, and suddenly the bubble broke free, rising to the surface where his eyes were flooded with the light of day. Initially, R.A. believed he had been in the presence of God during this experience. However, over the years, he struggled with questions about whether the source was God or Satan, though he tends to believe it was indeed God. This uncertainty led him to be very careful about not being misled by false prophets. He developed a heightened awareness of the difficulty people have with correct discernment when influenced by spiritual beings. Since the experience, there have been times when he felt he was undergoing spiritual disruptions and attacks, leading him to actively seek God's protection. Despite these challenges, the experience fundamentally changed his understanding of death and spiritual reality.
