At age eight, Peter and his twin brother were visiting a friend of their parents who lived on a man-made lake. While his parents were busy inside the house, his brother got into the first canoe and paddled about a hundred yards toward the middle of the lake. When Peter reached for the second canoe, he fell into an eight-foot section of the lake. Unable to swim, he immediately blacked out upon hitting the water. The next thing he remembered was finding himself about ten feet away from his physical body, observing it from an outside perspective. His body appeared to be floating at the bottom of the lake's mud wall with eyes closed, suspended in at least four feet of water above it.
During this out-of-body experience, Peter observed his unconscious form for what seemed like a short period, though time appeared to move in slow motion. While separated from his physical body, he experienced the most intense feeling of inner peace he had ever felt - an indescribable sense of complete tranquility and joy that he has never experienced again since that day. The vision was remarkably clear, as vivid as everyday experiences, though being underwater created a silent movie-like quality to the observation. He studied his body floating at the bottom of the lake with a sense of detachment and wonder, feeling no panic or distress despite the life-threatening situation. Peter then felt himself moving toward and rejoining his body. At the point of reunification, everything went dark, and he found himself alone on the shore with no one around him. He has no memory of how he was pulled from the lake or who rescued him, but believes God charges His angels to watch over us. The experience left him with an unshakeable belief in the afterlife and God's existence, transforming his already devout Catholic faith into an even stronger Protestant faith later in life. Even decades later, when he recalls the experience, he gets chills and reflects upon that overwhelming feeling of peace. This drowning incident at age eight became one of the most significant spiritual experiences of Peter's life. Though he experienced no tunnel, encountered no beings, and received no life review or special knowledge, the simple yet profound out-of-body experience and the incredible peace he felt convinced him absolutely of consciousness surviving bodily death. He considers the experience definitely real and more accurately remembered than other childhood events. The mystery of his rescue adds another dimension to his faith, as someone or something saved him from certain death by drowning, returning him safely to shore.
