At age twelve, Paula experienced a severe medical crisis related to rheumatic fever with mitral valve prolapse. While in the bathroom at home, she turned from the sink to the towel bar when intense pain suddenly stopped in an unusual way that made her feel she was dying. Her parents found her unconscious and shaking, attempting to revive her while a neighbor who was a volunteer life squad member was called. During this critical moment, Paula had an extraordinary out-of-body experience where she floated to the ceiling, looking down at her parents desperately trying to revive her body below. She was surrounded by bright white light and felt perfectly peaceful, floating without pain. From this elevated perspective, she observed her parents shaking her body and appearing very upset. She could see everything with remarkable clarity, as if viewing through high-definition glasses. She made a conscious decision to return for her parents, thinking they could not handle losing her, and instantly found herself back in her body looking up at them.
The physical severity of her condition became apparent the next day when doctors diagnosed rheumatic fever. She was immediately hospitalized and placed on complete bed rest for two months, not even allowed to leave bed for the bathroom. Following hospitalization, she spent another two months at home on strict bed rest, only permitted to walk across the hall to the bathroom. The doctor told her parents within earshot that she would only live to about age thirty and would not have much of a life, which motivated Paula to prove him wrong. This experience profoundly affected her spiritual beliefs - she transitioned from believing in God to knowing God exists, and now prays directly in front of God rather than to someone far away. The most remarkable aspect of Paula's experience was the conscious choice to return to her body. While floating at the ceiling in that brilliant light, she felt an incredible sense of peace and joy that she had never experienced before or since. The decision to return was made purely out of love and concern for her parents. The experience has never faded from her memory and remains as vivid as when it occurred. She did not share the experience with her mother until she was in her thirties, when her mother confirmed that when she looked into Paula's eyes that day, Paula "wasn't there." The experience eliminated Paula's fear of death and gave her direct knowledge of the afterlife's existence. Years later, Paula became a health and wellness coach, feeling compelled to help others heal themselves - a passion she traces directly back to her near-death experience. She regularly shares her story during health seminars and speaking engagements, helping others understand that death is not something to fear. The experience taught her that we continue to exist after our physical bodies die, and that there is a divine presence of incredible love and peace awaiting us.
