At age 11, Oliver was rushed to intensive care with septicemia (dangerous blood infection) resulting from a misdiagnosed case of colonic volvulus (twisted bowel). A general practitioner had incorrectly diagnosed him with acute gastroenteritis, leaving him without proper treatment for 24 hours during which he fainted several times. His mother finally insisted on hospital admission after he spent a night on the couch with his parents, during which he exhibited concerning behavior including talking to an unseen presence, telling his mother repeatedly that it was his time to go and that he loved her, saying all he wanted was to be a happy girl. He also repeatedly told someone invisible to "shut up and quit being an asshole," apparently addressing someone who had come to take him. His sister upstairs heard a voice saying "She's dying" over and over, though Oliver was male. By 8:25 AM, he was gone.
When his mother went to check on him around 10:00 AM, a voice told her "She's dead and you'd better do something." His family found him in a state of "death grey" with his father shaking him and his mother doing compressions while his sister called 911. Oliver reports being outside his body watching his parents and hanging with his sister on the porch until he heard sirens in the distance. He was then suddenly grabbed up and propelled at incredible speed through a black tunnel darker than black itself, traveling through what seemed like a spiral wormhole. In the distance, he saw a tiny point of light that grew quickly into a glowing disc or orb emanating an incredible milky white color that was brilliant without hurting the eye. This light radiated an indescribable reassuring calm, and all his pain vanished as his only desire became reaching the light. When Oliver arrived near the light, he was propelled at incredible speed toward it before being suddenly stopped. He found himself floating in an indescribable, immaculate place without tangible limits, saturated with the essence of absolute light made of immeasurable love. He existed as an observer without physical body, bathed in pure elation within this love so deep that all memories faded. The misty, luminous space without borders felt more familiar than his earthly home, and he wanted to proceed further. However, a telepathic voice that seemed to come simultaneously from himself and the Light told him to go back: "It is not your time yet." Despite his protests and desire to stay where he wasn't hurting and felt happy, the instruction was reiterated more firmly from this omnipresent universal voice, and he was sucked back into his body. Returning to his body was extremely painful. Oliver awoke covered in tubes and equipment, seeing his parents behind the window with his mother crying. Outside, the doctor and anesthetist, covered in blood, told his parents he wouldn't have survived if he'd arrived just an hour later. The experience completely changed his life, and he has not gone a week without thinking about it and questioning its nature. As a normally skeptical person, he finds the vivid reality of the experience undeniable and life-transforming.
