Monica, an 11-year-old type 1 diabetic, was staying with her parents due to illness. On November 20, 1999, she had the flu but refused to go to the emergency room. During the night, she became disoriented, mistaking an alarm clock for water and experiencing difficulty breathing. At 8:10 AM, she began telling her mother it was her time to go and that she loved her, while also telling an unseen presence to "shut up and quit being an asshole." Her sister upstairs heard a voice saying "She's dying" repeatedly. By 8:25, Monica had stopped breathing and had no pulse.
Her mother discovered Monica was dead around 10:00 AM when a voice told her "She's dead and you'd better do something." Monica appeared "death grey" with no vital signs. Her parents performed CPR - her father doing compressions while her mother did breaths - as her sister called 911. Monica reports being outside her body during this time, watching her parents work on her and standing with her sister on the porch. She was then pulled into what felt like a peaceful waiting room saturated with absolute light and immeasurable love. The experience was so beautiful that all memories faded in this misty, luminous space without borders. She felt completely transcended by this immense love and wanted to stay in this familiar place that felt more like home than earth. During her experience, Monica had an overview of her life, understanding who she should and shouldn't be with, and gained insights about the meaning of life. She could hear prayers from her family and was aware of their thoughts and fears. Medical staff told her family she had been down too long and they should let her go. However, a telepathic voice from the Light told her "It is not your time yet." Despite fighting to stay and feeling angry about being pushed back, she was sent back to her body. She heard her family's prayers throughout the experience and sensed their emotional states. The medical team had given up hope, telling her family she had been without vital signs for over an hour. Monica suddenly opened her eyes in the ICU to the amazement of everyone, holding out her hand to her shocked parents. She had a tube down her throat but recognized the date on the board - Monday, November 22, 1999. Returning to her body was extremely painful, and she felt tremendous sadness being back in the cold ICU. The doctor and anesthetist, covered with blood, told her parents she wouldn't have survived if she had arrived just an hour later. Monica continues to think about the experience weekly and reports it completely changed her life, giving her certainty about life after death.
