On May 24, 2005, Mindy was a passenger in a car that experienced catastrophic steering failure, resulting in a head-on collision with a Jeep followed by a second impact. During the crash, she felt and heard her bones breaking as her chest folded around the headrest. Unable to breathe and experiencing severe internal injuries with abdominal swelling, she passed out multiple times while lying on the roadside. After sorting through thoughts of her family and accepting her impending death, she prayed for her mother's strength and thanked Jesus, saying "I am coming home!" As she exhaled what she believed was her last breath, everything went white (not black), and she felt herself moving upward and traveling quickly through brilliant whiteness. From below, she heard the woman helping her yell "Oh my God! She's stopped breathing! Hurry get the paramedics over here, she's stopped breathing!" When Mindy thought about calming the woman and letting her know it was okay, her upward movement slowed and she returned to her body. The woman later confirmed she had indeed called out when Mindy stopped breathing. Mindy underwent surgery for internal bleeding and awoke three days later, initially angry at being alive. For 18 months she believed she was either dead or in a coma, taking dangerous risks before finally accepting her survival.
