On August 16, 2004, Mike, a fireman, experienced a severe car accident on his way to a new job. After stopping for coffee due to being up with his new baby, he lost consciousness and awoke in an ambulance where EMTs informed him it had taken 2.5 hours to extract him from his vehicle. At the trauma center emergency room, he experienced an out-of-body state, simultaneously seeing himself being wheeled in while his physical body was on the gurney. He stopped breathing twice in the ER. During these episodes, he saw visions of his children playing in a park, watching them from a distance as if not really there. He saw a bright light and tunnel, followed by more visions. He sensed his deceased grandmother's presence (died 1997) though he didn't see her. After multiple X-rays, CT scans, and a chest tube insertion, he survived what doctors said he shouldn't have. The experience left him with lasting psychological effects, replaying for months afterward. He gained stronger belief in God and guardian angels, understanding that "someone is looking down from above." The NDE showed him business and career aspects of his future. Eight years later, the anniversary still affects him deeply. The experience transformed his relationship with his children, making him realize life's fragility and the importance of being present for them.
