In 1983, Michele experienced severe hemorrhaging during a first-trimester miscarriage. Her husband rushed her to the emergency room where nurses scrambled around her on the examination table. As her vision dimmed to black despite her eyes being open, she heard the doctor screaming "Order 5 units!" While everything went dark, she lost all pain and could hear everything clearly. She thought calmly, "Oh, this is what it's like to die." She felt herself pulling upward toward her head and shoulders, beginning to float up, thinking "This is easy, so easy." The experience abruptly ended when everything stopped, and she reopened her eyes to see medical staff wheeling her to the operating room. She remembers them draping her, inserting an IV with a funny taste, and feeling like a ton of bricks hit her chest before blanking out. She awoke in recovery with a nurse saying "You gave us quite the scare." Later she learned there had been an anesthesia problem. Michele was disappointed she didn't see "the light" and troubled that she hadn't thought of her one-year-old daughter during what she believed was death. The experience eliminated her fear of death and strengthened her spiritual beliefs, leading her to convert from Catholicism to Orthodox Christianity in 2010.
