Michael experienced a severe medical crisis on November 23, 2011, when preparing Thanksgiving dinner. After projectile vomiting, he was taken by ambulance where he lost consciousness. He developed pancreatitis that went septic, shutting down his kidneys and liver, and his heart stopped, going into deep fibrillation. His body severely swelled. During his five-day coma, Michael experienced what he believed was hell - a dark, eerie landscape populated by giant red dragons. He witnessed people trapped in circus-like carts, screaming and bleeding. He entered a blood-red gypsy cart with red streamers, then fled from pursuing dragons. A man riding a golden dragon rescued him from this place. Subsequently, he found himself in a room conversing with his deceased father (who had died in August that year), who advised him to let go of the past and move forward. His final vision involved a winter airport scene with a tram containing his children, covered in ice he couldn't penetrate, with grape drink flowing in a fountain for them. He awakened in intensive care with his hands restrained, on a respirator due to pneumonia. Doctors informed his son he had only a 20% survival chance. Michael attributes his survival to prayers from friends and relatives. He experienced ICU psychosis upon awakening, believing everyone was trying to kill him.
