Michael underwent heart surgery in May 1994, during which his heart was stopped and he was placed on a heart-lung machine. Before surgery, he reflected on Christ's crucifixion as his arms were stretched for IVs. During the operation, he experienced leaving his body and observing the surgical procedure from above, accompanied by an unseen individual. He watched with amusement as surgeons struggled to restart his heart with paddles, finding their panic humorous. Once revived, his companion led him to a narrow door. Upon entering, Michael felt overwhelming love and warmth, finding himself in a beautiful field with an impossibly blue sky. He heard music emanating from everything - rocks, trees, and grass - all praising God. He saw a throne or altar with multicolored streams of light and an intense white center that radiated love. Twenty-four hours later, he awoke in agony and begged Jesus to take him back, receiving no response. Two days post-surgery, his heart went into defibrillation for five hours. During this crisis, he felt a hand on his chest and heard a voice saying "Mich'l, I heard you but remember I answer in my time not yours," after which his heart normalized. Weeks later at home, he experienced traveling through a multicolored tunnel at high speed before suddenly reversing direction and awakening to find his wife saying he had stopped breathing. The experience profoundly changed his spiritual life, leading to nightly conversations with God.
