On October 18, 1970, Melanie was a passenger in a convertible that crashed into a dead-end embankment at approximately 45 mph. Not wearing a seatbelt, she was thrown into the rearview mirror and windshield, breaking both before her head came back through into the car. She also forcefully hit the dashboard with her chest and abdomen. She was dragged from the vehicle covered in what she initially thought was rain but was actually blood. While her boyfriend repeatedly pleaded "Please don't die," she kept telling him she loved him, not wanting him to feel guilty when she died.
A fellow passenger ran several miles to call for help, returning with a high school coach who determined she wouldn't survive waiting for an ambulance. During the 30-mile drive to the emergency room, she lost consciousness. The doctor later confirmed that upon arrival about an hour after the accident, she had no pulse or blood pressure. During her clinical death, she found herself hovering at ceiling level in the emergency room, observing her body on the table with people working on her. She felt completely detached and interested in the medical procedures, even asking "Oh, a blood transfusion, who is getting that?" before realizing it was her own body. She experienced incredible peace and felt a tremendous weight lifted from her shoulders, with clarity unlike anything she had known. Someone unseen answered her questions. When she realized the medical team was trying to put her back into her body, she tried to fight them off, desperately wanting to stay in that peaceful state. Suddenly she was back in her body, eyes popping open as she lay on the treatment table. The experience permanently changed her perspective on death and life's meaning, making her value relationships more deeply and leading to a 40-year happy marriage. She also developed premonitions about deaths, accurately predicting three close relatives' deaths days before they occurred.
