Following a severe car accident on July 1, 2006, Mary experienced clinical death with no pulse or blood pressure upon arrival at the emergency room. She had suffered massive trauma including broken back, external pelvic fixator, tracheotomy, and severe abdominal wounds. She remained in a coma for approximately one week and later contracted MRSA and pneumonia three times. Upon awakening, she was in extreme pain, desperately thirsty, and cognitively impaired for about two weeks, initially believing she might be in hell.
During her near-death experience, she found herself floating in complete darkness, knowing she was no longer on Earth. She floated naked in the fetal position within pitch-black space, yet paradoxically aware of bright white light encompassing her whole body visible through closed eyelids. The sensation was beyond earthly experience - the best feeling imaginable intensified by a trillion. A female voice commanded her twice to return, speaking first mentally then audibly with increasing sternness when Mary resisted, saying she did not want to go back. The experience lacked typical NDE elements like tunnels, life reviews, or deceased relatives, but left her with absolute certainty about God's existence and that the spirit's homecoming surpasses any earthly joy. The doctor later confirmed she had arrived with no vital signs and called her survival miraculous. The experience transformed her from a pessimistic, depressed person waiting to die into someone who values life, though she initially felt robbed of dying and struggled with her transformed identity.
