Following his third suicide attempt by medication overdose around June 2000, Marten experienced a profound near-death experience while in a week-long coma. From his small 4x4 meter apartment, he observed his own body from a floating position near the ceiling as two doctors, two paramedics, and police officers worked on him. He witnessed the ironic scene of his normally empty apartment now overcrowded with emergency personnel. He heard unflattering comments about this not being his first attempt and tried unsuccessfully to communicate that he was fine, waving his arms and calling out, but no one could hear or see him.
After saying goodbye to his body, he suddenly found himself in a dark space or tunnel that initially frightened him. He was drawn toward a brilliant white light unlike anything on Earth. Upon entering the light, he discovered a perfect realm with intensely colored flowers, rivers, and houses that radiated happiness and peace. The music was in perfect harmony with everything. He felt completely free from pain and mental suffering, understanding for the first time how much psychiatric patients truly suffer. He encountered a deceased family member who appeared much younger and alive, along with two veiled figures he felt were spiritual guides. His life was shown to him rapidly - past, present, and future fitting together like puzzle pieces in the universe. Though told his work wasn't finished and he must return (with the specific work being erased from his memory upon return), he reluctantly said goodbye and returned to his body. After awakening from the seven-day coma, he shared specific details about what the medical staff had said and worn, though they dismissed him as crazy. The experience transformed him completely - he never attempted suicide again, became religious, found a loving disabled partner, and understood that caring for each other was part of his unfinished work.
