During heart surgery following a heart attack and coronary artery blockage, Marlene experienced clinical death when medical staff could not restart her heart. She found herself hovering in a corner near the ceiling, observing her body on the operating table with all the attached equipment. She could see the medical team working on her, and her family had been told in the waiting room that the prognosis was poor - if they could not restart her heart within 30 minutes, they would call a code.
After being placed on a defibrillator in recovery, she experienced intense pressure followed by total darkness and a spiraling down sensation. She then entered a dark spiral that transformed into a tunnel of light. At the end of the tunnel, she encountered brilliant, peaceful light and her deceased mother, who had been dead for 30 years. Her mother told her it was not her time and she needed to return, though Marlene desperately wanted to stay with her. Upon returning to her body, she experienced profound personality changes and felt as though she had been replaced by someone else, even feeling she had lost her soul. The experience left her feeling robbed of dying and fundamentally altered. She later verified details by asking about a red-haired nurse who had attended to her, only to be told she could not have possibly seen the nurse since she was unconscious, and the nurse had already left on leave. The experience permanently changed her perspective on death and the afterlife.
