During childbirth on February 8, 2008, Maia received an epidural that initially made her more comfortable. Within seconds of lying back, she began feeling nauseous and asked her husband for a basin. Immediately, her blood pressure began plummeting dangerously - dropping to 43/28 - though this was not immediately noticed by medical staff. Everything around her seemed to slow to a different time zone, with people moving in slow motion while sounds became increasingly quiet. She sensed she was going to die but felt unconcerned, experiencing a sense of completeness and confidence that her unborn daughter would be fine with her father.
As she closed her eyes, she was immediately above her own body, observing the entire labor room below as if watching a play unfold. She experienced an unnatural calm and complete weightlessness unlike anything before or since. There was no pain, pleasure, or movement - just absolute stillness. Though the experience felt like a split second to her, it actually lasted 45 minutes. When she opened her eyes and returned to her body, her mother was at the foot of the bed crying, asking if she remembered what happened. During the out-of-body experience, she witnessed her mother pointing out the dropping blood pressure on the monitor to the midwife, saw the midwife run from the room and return with two anesthesiologists who administered medication via injection. All of this was later verified as accurate. She experienced incredible mental clarity, feeling she had never been more than 80% awake before this moment. Everything appeared in intense focus with surprising luminosity and color, while she felt part of an unearthly light. The experience left her without fear of death and changed her perspective on life's meaning. She felt complete serenity, calm, and happiness during the experience, along with a sense of no longer being in conflict with nature. The time distortion was particularly striking - what felt like a brief moment was actually three-quarters of an hour, during which critical medical interventions saved her life.
