At age three in 1969, Maggy was at a small beach with her father. She was alone in the water, bobbing up and down in the waves by squatting so her head went underwater with each wave. Her legs grew tired and she could no longer raise her head above the water line. Despite trying hard to stand erect, she could not escape the water. She panicked initially, but the fear did not last long as she began to drown.
Soon she found herself feeling comfortable, peaceful, and relaxed. Her consciousness was no longer in the water but had shifted to another state of being. She found herself in darkness, but she was not alone or afraid. She had no sense that she might die and instead became curious about where she was. The darkness was not frightening but rather comforting, and she sensed a protective presence with her. In this otherworldly realm, she felt emotions of love, joy, and complete contentment. Everything felt right with the world. She experienced incredible peace and joy, feeling united with the universe. Though she could not see anything in the darkness, she was no longer aware of her body and felt she had entered a clearly mystical realm. She sensed the presence of beings and felt comforted and protected, knowing she was safe. The experience felt timeless, with time seeming to go faster or slower than usual. Her father rescued her from the water before she could explore further. Water drained from her lungs and she began breathing on her own, though she was very sick afterward. She felt surprised to find herself back at the beach and felt robbed of the opportunity to remain in that peaceful place. She did not speak of the experience until age 45, when she finally shared it with her parents. Both were surprised by her account, and her father clearly remembered the day. The experience was so profound that even as a young child, the memory remained more vivid than other childhood events.
