On April 2, 1993, Lydia underwent a scheduled cesarean section for her third child, Sofia. Unknown to the medical team, she had placenta accreta, a life-threatening condition where the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall. The condition was not detected until the surgeons were already performing the C-section. After successfully delivering the baby and briefly holding her, complications arose when the surgeons could not close due to the placenta accreta. The situation became critical when the surgeon called for an emergency hysterectomy, but the anesthesiologist reported they lacked necessary blood supplies as the blood bank was closed and 10 minutes away.
As Lydia began losing massive amounts of blood, she heard the doctors yelling and nurses running. In desperation, she prayed intensely to God not to take her, pleading for her three young children. She then made a conscious decision to leave her body through the cesarean incision to reach her baby and other children, believing that if she could embrace all three, God would not be able to take her. She left her body and floated beside it, clearly observing the doctors, nurses, machines, and surgical instruments. She then flew through the hospital hallways to the newborn unit, took Sofia in her arms, and flew from the hospital. While flying with Sofia toward her other children, a white light guided her along a path that appeared to be made of thousands of spotlights. Midway, an intense yellow light path crossed the white path. She stopped before crossing the yellow lights, realizing she would not reach her children before the surgeon closed her incision. From above, she could perfectly see her children sleeping peacefully, which gave her peace. Understanding she risked getting "stuck outside," she heard or told herself to "Go back" and hurried to return to her body, which appeared asleep while doctors worked calmly in complete silence. During her out-of-body experience, the medical team was performing an emergency hysterectomy, transfusing five pints of blood and one pint of platelets. She died clinically and was resuscitated with machines, then sent to intensive care in a comatose state. She remembered everything upon awakening from the coma 12 hours later and remained in intensive care for eight days. She later verified the hospital layout she had never seen before, correctly describing the locations of operating rooms, intensive care, newborn unit, and hallways.
