Lisa underwent a cardiac ablation procedure for atrial fibrillation under general anesthesia that lasted 9 hours. During the procedure, severe damage occurred to her heart causing high degree heart block, and her heart stopped functioning. Medical staff attempted cardio-conversion multiple times without success. She heard the panicked staff rushing around, instruments being dropped on metal trays, and someone saying "high degree heart block." During this critical moment, she experienced a profound shift in consciousness.
She found herself in what appeared to be a pure white room or space, unable to see anything specific but feeling an overwhelming warmth and comfort. Though she saw no one, she sensed a powerful presence with her. The love and comfort she experienced was unlike anything she had ever felt before - completely unconditional and all-encompassing. She felt no pain during this time, only extreme comfort and peace. When she heard the medical staff's diagnosis, she felt no concern and did not want to return to her body, feeling perfectly content where she was. The experience seemed to last only seconds from her perspective, though approximately 45 minutes had passed. An external pacemaker was placed to maintain her heart function when it could not restart on its own. She eventually required a permanent pacemaker. Upon returning, she experienced significant psychological effects including nightmares and panic attacks that she had not experienced before, along with guilt about not wanting to return to her life. The experience fundamentally changed her relationship with death - she no longer fears it and feels it provided her with clarity about the temporary nature of physical existence. The overwhelming love she felt during the experience remains unforgettable and has given her peace about what awaits beyond death.
