In 1967, 15-year-old Leonell experienced an apparent death after falling from a trapeze at his school playground. After getting a haircut at the barber shop, he stopped by the school playing field where boys were playing on the apparatus. While doing abdominal exercises on a trapeze, it began to rock, causing him to slip and fall on his back onto the stony ground. The impact injured him from his waist to his head, and he lost consciousness immediately.
During his unconscious state, Leonell found himself speeding through a layer of clouds, still dressed in his blue jeans, white t-shirt, and sneakers. He was running toward a brilliant white light that was very far away, with a violet light visible underneath it. He felt no sense of time and experienced no physical limitations despite the intensity of the light not affecting his farsighted vision. Suddenly he heard someone call him - not with audible words but as if communicated without speech. When he turned around in response, he fell into an abyss and began returning to his body. The return journey involved first hearing a long, sharp whistling noise in his ears, then seeing shadows that gradually became clearer. These shadows resolved into the boys looking down at him as he lay face-up on the ground. A priest (Padre) was at his side, wiping something he had placed on Leonell's left hand and forehead - apparently administering last rites with holy oil. The priest exclaimed "He's not dead! He's not dead!" expressing relief at Leonell's revival. When Leonell came to, the priest asked if he was okay. He said yes, got up, and went home, where he discovered his back was marked by the stones from the ground. The priest later confirmed he had thought Leonell was dead and had administered last rites. This validation, along with the physical evidence of the fall, confirmed the reality of the experience. The NDE didn't significantly change Leonell's religious practices - he moved from active Catholicism to being non-religious but retained belief in the light and continued existence after death. He later had two additional, shorter similar experiences.
