On February 12, 1977, at 9:42 PM, 24-year-old Lawrence H "straight-lined" (flatlined) in the ICU while suffering from severe viral infection with sepsis. He had been hospitalized after days of flu-like symptoms with fever reaching 106°F, which led to cardio-pulmonary and renal failure. Despite extensive medical procedures including breathing tubes, IVs, biopsies, and constant monitoring, his condition deteriorated until clinical death occurred. The medical team worked to revive him during the 2-3 minutes he was clinically dead.
During this time, Lawrence experienced floating in space, seeing vivid colors of the universe like floating gases. He was then drawn upward toward a very bright, peaceful light, feeling as if on an escalator moving without effort. The journey was through darkness that appeared like a tunnel. When he reached the top, the light disappeared and he found himself in darkness until a voice called his name twice. Turning around, he saw his deceased grandfather and uncle standing on a slightly elevated stage. His grandfather asked if he knew who they were, and upon confirmation, smiled and said they wanted Lawrence to come with them. Thinking of his wife and baby daughter, Lawrence said he could not go and must return. His grandfather responded, "The choice is yours," then reached out to shake his hand saying "Take Care." The handshake felt remarkably warm and full of energy, conveying pure love that Lawrence had never experienced before. He then woke in the ICU with the conviction that everything would be okay. Within three weeks, Lawrence was discharged. Upon discharge, the ICU doctor placed his chart on the bed, stood by the window watching a plane, then asked if Lawrence believed in God. When Lawrence said yes, the doctor stated he had worked in ICU for over 20 years and there was no medical explanation for Lawrence's survival - someone had given him a second chance and he better make the best of it. This statement profoundly changed Lawrence's life. The experience eliminated his fear of death, made him more positive and reassured about life, and gave him lasting peace. Years later, when his wife was dying, he used his experience to comfort her, helping her pass peacefully in his arms.
