On October 31, 1996, Laura L experienced a life-threatening postpartum hemorrhage after delivering premature twins. She had retained placenta and was losing excessive blood over three days. Initially afraid of blood transfusions, she refused consent, but her condition deteriorated with continuing bleeding. During this medical crisis, she felt a detachment from her loved ones and experienced fear, which then suddenly disappeared.
Laura found herself on the ceiling of her hospital room, observing her body below along with the doctors and nurses working on it. She felt no fear and wondered why the medical staff was so concerned about "that person" on the bed, not initially recognizing it as herself. Then she was suddenly enveloped in a wonderful, overwhelming light that felt tremendously good beyond words. She found herself standing on a river made of liquid light, with grass and landscape that seemed composed of or infused with this same light. The experience was profoundly awesome and peaceful. While standing by this river of light in the otherworldly realm, Laura turned to look upstream but was suddenly pulled back to her body. She returned to find herself receiving the blood transfusions she had initially refused. She was extremely angry about being brought back, preferring to stay in the light-filled realm. The experience caused significant memory loss - she forgot many things from her previous life and had to relearn them, with some memories never returning. The anger about returning lasted several years, but the experience completely eliminated her fear of death, which she had previously harbored. She came back fundamentally changed as a person, with new perspectives on life and death. She transitioned from religious uncertainty to firm belief in God and the afterlife. She became much more compassionate, stopped drinking alcohol entirely, and began teaching her children about God and the afterlife - something she wouldn't have done without this experience. The vivid reality of the light-realm and river has remained with her, representing a place of perfect peace where difficulties cease to exist.
