In 1980, seven-year-old Laura was playing tag on her school playground, which had a cement surface. While chasing a friend named Jenn up a tall slide, they met at the top where Laura suddenly passed out and fell. The fall resulted in pressure fractures to her skull and arm, requiring hospitalization and X-rays for diagnosis. A priest (Padre) administered last rites, believing she had died, but then exclaimed "He's not dead!" when she showed signs of life.
During her unconscious state, Laura experienced floating above the playground, observing everything from an elevated perspective in a dreamlike, slow-motion state. She watched a girl with blonde braids falling from the slide, turning over and over in the air. Initially fascinated and feeling euphoric about floating, she gradually realized the falling girl was herself. She felt no pain, fear, or worry - only detachment, slight confusion, and thrill at being airborne. She could see the pine trees and had heightened awareness of details like the light, her braids' position, and her friend's expression. The return to her body was sudden and shocking. She was "slammed" back into her physical form, finding herself surrounded by people who appeared as frightening silhouettes against an intensely bright light. Initially, they looked like alien shapes due to the backlighting, causing her to cry from fear rather than pain. The playground attendant was visibly frightened, and Laura was taken to the nurse before her mother arrived to take her to the hospital. Laura noted that she left her body before hitting the ground, not after impact as might be expected. The experience left permanent impressions - she became pale and unusually frightened according to her mother, unusual for a typically brave child. When she removed her shirt at home, her back bore marks from the playground stones. She has never forgotten this experience, which included enhanced consciousness, time distortion, and profound sensory vividness. The validation came from others witnessing her fall and the priest's reaction, though the out-of-body observation itself remained her private experience.
