In mid-June 1974, Larry P underwent extensive leg surgery under general anesthesia. The operation was performed by Dr. X, a brilliant surgeon using newly available techniques to save the leg. Larry recalls being prepped and wheeled into the operating room, counting backward from 100 but not making it to 99 before losing consciousness.
During the surgery, Larry experienced floating upward to the ceiling, seeing everything in the operating room from above in proper perspective. He could clearly identify himself on the operating table. He continued floating upward through what he described as a tunnel or conduit, moving toward a brilliant white light that emanated intense warmth and love. The experience was accompanied by an exceptionally loving feeling that was incredibly tempting. As he approached the light, he encountered a diaphanous curtain that represented a boundary - he understood that if he passed through it, he could not return to life. At this critical juncture, Larry thought of his wife and children and made the conscious choice to return. The love for his family outweighed the peaceful, loving attraction of the light. He felt some sadness for his body on the table but ultimately chose life with his loved ones. He then awoke in recovery and was told the operation had gone well. Remarkably, about 18-24 months after the surgery, at a wine and cheese event, Larry encountered his surgeon Dr. X. To Larry's astonishment, the doctor specifically asked him, "By the way, did you experience a near death experience during the operation?" When Larry confirmed he had, the doctor's knowledge of the possibility suggested awareness of something unusual during the procedure. This independent confirmation from the surgeon adds credibility to Larry's experience. The NDE profoundly changed Larry, making him more loving, forgiving, less self-centered, and more compassionate - changes he credits with saving his marriage.
