Kathy experienced a severe asthma attack during a snowstorm, with paramedics taking 40 minutes to arrive. She struggled to breathe for this extended period while her husband stayed with her. As her awareness faded, everything became focused on trying to breathe. She lost vision, feeling in her limbs, and experienced horrible chest pressure. Suddenly she felt a "whoosh" and everything became perfectly clear. Her mind felt sharp and alive, she felt wonderful, and realized she wasn't breathing and didn't need to. She had no body and felt like she was floating above the bookcase, though she couldn't see anything in the darkness. She felt incredible peace, knowing everything was exactly as it meant to be. When she realized she had no body, she became determined not to leave her 2-year-old daughter, feeling it was crucial the child not forget her. She saw a small light beginning but willed herself not to go toward it. She slammed back into her body as medics were intubating her. The experience left her without fear of death itself, though still fearing the dying process. She gained certainty about life's meaning and became more compassionate and genuine in relationships.
