Karen experienced two NDEs during surgical complications. First on April 23, 1998, during emergency surgery for internal bleeding after a laparoscopy. She lost 3-5 liters of blood and required resuscitation. During this first NDE, she traveled through a tunnel to a gate with three figures - her grandmother (who was alive but having a stroke at that time), and two unidentified human-like beings. The feeling of harmony, love and goodness was overwhelming. They were told they weren't allowed to pass yet. Karen went back but her grandmother stayed. She learned the next day her grandmother had indeed had a stroke. The second NDE occurred May 9 when a kidney drain was inserted after discovering surgeons had accidentally stitched her ureter closed. She traveled through time and space to the same gate, where her grandmother and the two beings remained. There was blindingly beautiful, all-encompassing light. Her grandmother went through the gate while Karen was sent back with tremendous love. She awoke after four days in ICU to learn her grandmother had died May 9. Both experiences featured overwhelming love, peace, harmony and a sense of knowing. The experiences left her without fear of death, with increased compassion and understanding.
