Karen experienced a life-threatening medical crisis with respiratory distress and atrial flutter requiring ICU admission. She was gasping for breath and told doctors she was having trouble staying alive. During the crisis, she had severe edema and 500cc of pus was drained from her abdomen which was impairing her breathing. She also had restrictive lung function from scoliosis. During this emergency, she saw images of her deceased mother and aunt, who appeared younger and dressed in formal clothes. She also saw her living sister who was on the West Coast praying for her. In an instant, she realized her mother already knew what was happening and didn't need to be told. The images seemed to flash as she regained normal consciousness. She experienced no tunnel or light, but felt calm and unafraid during the experience. She later learned her sister had indeed been praying continuously for her during the crisis. The experience left her with enhanced color perception, greater appreciation for life and relationships, increased compassion, and more direct communication style. She became less perfectionist and more understanding of others.
