In 1976, Josefa experienced a near-death event when friends cut off her breathing by squeezing her chest and lungs, causing complete respiratory arrest. Very quickly after losing consciousness, Josefa felt hot and found herself in a large passageway, more expansive than a tunnel, with an enormous double door at the end through which white light filtered. When the door opened, the light invaded and surrounded her completely. On either side of the door stood rows of indistinct people she didn't recognize, waiting for her and applauding her arrival. She was engulfed in pure wellbeing and indescribable happiness. The feeling transcended normal human emotion, representing pure love everywhere. Though the beings seemed to know her, she couldn't identify them specifically. Josefa experienced the spiritual realm and welcoming committee but reported no specific veridical observations of the physical world that could be verified. Her experience focused entirely on the transcendent journey through the passageway, the opening doors, the brilliant light, and the welcoming beings. The overwhelming emotions of love and wellbeing dominated her perception rather than earthly observations. The return to her body was abrupt and violent when her friends successfully revived her. The experience fundamentally transformed her worldview from atheism to spiritual awareness, though not toward any organized religion. She developed premonitory abilities and a deeper understanding of situations before they occur. The experience eliminated her fear of death completely, knowing she is awaited somewhere. She became more compassionate but also more sensitive to hostile people. The pure love she experienced remains with her decades later, permeating her entire being.
