In the fall of 1974, seven-year-old Jon was building a fort with his best friend from a fallen tree after a windstorm. While gathering branches for the roof, Jon crossed the street to collect materials. He grabbed a branch, looked both ways before crossing back, took three steps into the road, and on the fourth step found himself suddenly transported to his bedroom. He was struck by a car but never saw it coming or felt the impact. The collision caused severe facial trauma requiring 10 stitches in his chin, 24 stitches in his tongue, knocked out his front left tooth, pushed his right front tooth up into his gums, and left a massive bruise on his right hip.
Upon the fourth step into the road, Jon instantaneously found himself standing in his bedroom, which seemed perfectly normal and natural. The room was illuminated with a soothing bright white light. A man in a white robe with a white beard and long white hair stood by the bay windows, smiling at him and indicating he should look outside. When Jon looked out the window, he saw people gathered in a group down in the road. The moment he saw this scene, everything went black. He began hearing a distant voice asking "Can you feel this?" while experiencing squeezing sensations on his foot and seeing blurry forms around him. Jon observed the accident scene from his bedroom window, seeing people gathered in the road below, though he didn't realize it was his own accident scene. This unique perspective - viewing the accident location from his actual bedroom window while his body lay injured in the street - represents an unusual form of bilocation or consciousness projection. He maintained crystal-clear vision of both the spiritual figure in his room and the scene outside, with the experience feeling completely natural until his return to his body. Jon's return to consciousness was traumatic and confusing. Finding himself on the cold, hard road surface with blood in his mouth, choking, he was convinced he was having a nightmare since he had just been safely in his bedroom. He strained to wake himself up, unable to comprehend the transition from bedroom to accident scene. Told he'd been hit by a car, he spent five days in the hospital with oral surgery and extensive stitching. The experience profoundly changed him - his mother noted he became quieter and more introspective, eventually becoming an art major and professional musician. He developed strong interests in psychic phenomena and spirituality, particularly Buddhism and Taoism.
