On July 12, 1981, John was traveling with his mother to a soccer game in Livonia when they were involved in a severe car accident. A Cadillac in the turn lane suddenly crossed into their path, causing a violent collision. John, who was not wearing a seatbelt, felt a surge of electricity and instinctively braced his hands against the dashboard just before impact. The force of the collision partially ejected him through the front windshield, causing multiple deep head gashes and facial cuts. His mother suffered a broken nose in several places, a broken knee, and other injuries.
Immediately after the impact, John experienced silence and a bright light, then found himself standing on the sidewalk observing the accident scene. He was in a serene state of awareness where everything moved in slow motion. He could see his body partly out of the vehicle's front window and noticed extensive blood on the smashed windshield. As people ran toward the vehicle in slow motion, he felt a tug on his arm from his childhood best friend Ruthy, who had died years earlier in an accident after moving from Michigan. She smiled at him, told him everything would be all right, that it was time to go back, and that she loved him. John observed the accident scene from outside his body, seeing his physical form partially through the windshield with blood on the smashed glass. He witnessed people running toward the vehicle in slow motion while he stood on the sidewalk in perfect serenity. He had complete awareness of the scene, including the positions of the vehicles, his body's location, and the approaching bystanders. His observations were later confirmed by the physical evidence and police reports. After Ruthy's message, John felt enormous pain everywhere and pulled himself back into the vehicle, hearing screaming sirens and voices all around. The police said they were extremely lucky to survive - his mother for being in what they called a "drunken state" of unconsciousness, and John for bracing himself, which left hand print impressions in the dashboard. The officers were surprised his elbow bones weren't protruding through his skin from the impact force. The experience was transformative, and John has since developed the ability to have out-of-body experiences at will.
