John was serving as a medic in Vietnam in 1965 when he was shot multiple times in the abdomen during battle. After a friend died in his arms, he stood up for unknown reasons and was struck by enemy fire. He fell by the roots of a tree with his small intestines protruding from a hole in his body. After initial paralysis and inability to move or close his eyes, he heard voices saying he was still pumping blood and was placed on a stretcher. He was rushed to surgery where medical staff worked desperately to save his life.
As John lay by the tree after being shot, everything grew quiet and he heard songbirds singing in the branches above, wondering where they came from since battles usually frightened away wildlife. He experienced great peace and no pain initially. During surgery, he observed himself from outside his body, watching as an uninvolved observer while medical personnel worked on his physical form. He saw himself being placed on the operating table and watched the surgical procedures being performed. The entire experience was dreamlike, observing everything without being emotionally affected, maintaining perfect peace throughout. He witnessed the medical team working frantically when someone said "we are losing him" and another ordered "give him 2 cc of [something]." John observed the surgical team working on his body, hearing them say "we are losing him" and ordering medication. He watched the entire surgical procedure from an out-of-body perspective, seeing himself on the operating table. He maintained awareness of specific medical interventions and heard the medical staff's comments about his condition. When he suddenly returned to his body with a loud BANG, experiencing the full pain of his injuries, the surgeon told him to be quiet as they were fixing him. After returning to his pain-wracked body during surgery, John spoke to the surgeon who told him to be quiet and go back to sleep. He followed this advice and woke a week later in Japan at a major facility for Vietnam wounded. The experience profoundly changed his spiritual understanding, leading him to believe in universal connection and love. He lost his fear of death and gained the ability to know people's hearts upon meeting them. The experience showed him that "we are all divine" and that the purpose of life is to "love one another."
