Johanna experienced a profound near-death experience in 1969 following a severe emotional crisis and subsequent massive stroke. After years of psychological abuse from her adoptive mother, she suffered a breakdown when her boss's criticism triggered memories of her adoptive mother's voice and face superimposed over his. Following this traumatic event, she went home and collapsed, with a doctor arriving and expressing doubt she would survive the night. If she did live, he predicted she would last only a month at most.
During the medical crisis, Johanna floated above her bed, observing her body below with remarkable detachment, thinking "you poor thing, you do look ill." The body on the bed felt completely disconnected from her conscious self floating near the ceiling. She then passed through the roof and entered a revolving, noisy tunnel. Exhausted, she attempted to sit down in the tunnel but was told by someone that she couldn't stay there and must move toward a pinprick of light that seemed impossibly distant. When she expressed her inability to move due to extreme fatigue, helpers were called and she was carried toward the brilliant but non-blinding light. At the light, a discussion ensued about her fate. A voice from the left suggested she should stay because she had endured a very hard life, while a voice from the right argued she should return because her work was not finished. A central voice directed her to walk while they decided. She found herself on a path beside a river where people sat on the bank, alone or in groups, reading, talking, or sitting quietly. The overwhelming feeling of peace, total acceptance, and the incredibly vivid colors unlike anything on earth made her desperate to remain. When called back and told her work was unfinished, she protested vehemently, kicking and screaming her desire to stay. Upon returning through the tunnel and re-entering her body, Johanna discovered she had suffered a massive right-side stroke, leaving her unable to move, speak, or initially even think clearly. Despite the devastating physical effects, she possessed an inner knowing that she would eventually walk and talk again, which she did achieve. The experience eliminated her fear of death and gave her certainty about the afterlife. She was also told that when she returns "in many years' time," she will not be coming back to earth again, suggesting a final transition when her life's work is complete.
