At age seven in October 1969, Joe fell from the top bunk bed while asleep and hit his head on the floor, triggering an extraordinary near-death experience. After the initial blank moment following impact, two small transparent or glowing entities entered his room while he was out of body. These beings, approximately four feet tall with fluorescent-like appearance and warm smiles, were incredibly friendly and each took one of his hands. They walked together through the wall, floating above the ground rather than touching the floor.
The three of them rose above his house where Joe could see all around and down at his home below. The entities communicated with him during this time, though he cannot recall the specific content of their words. In a remarkable display of consciousness beyond the body, Joe suddenly thought of his sister at a Halloween party and instantly found himself there, observing everything she was doing. After this distant observation, he found himself under his favorite mulberry tree in a pasture, where more communication occurred with the beings, though again the specific content has been forgotten. The experience was characterized by pure love - an intensity of love so profound that it remains with him decades later. The veridical aspect of Joe's experience became evident the next day when he told his sister about what he had observed at her Halloween party. His accurate description of her activities led her to become angry, assuming their mother had been spying on her. This independent verification of Joe's observations during his out-of-body state provides compelling evidence for the reality of his perceptions. The entities eventually told him that his time would go by fast and that he had to return, though Joe strongly resisted going back due to the overwhelming love he was experiencing. The beings walked Joe back to his bed, placed him back in his body, and tucked him in bed. When he opened his eyes, they looked back at him, waved with smiles, and departed. The experience fundamentally shaped who Joe became, instilling in him a deep sense of love and compassion for all people that persists to this day. Though he was very young and had no religious framework at the time, the experience gave him certainty about God's existence and life after death.
