At age 15, Jeanette was visiting her cousins in Edinburgh during summer holidays when she participated in a dangerous game of "chicken" riding a Chopper bike down a steep grassy hill. Determined not to be the one who used the brakes, she let the bike build up tremendous speed until the front wheel began wobbling uncontrollably. She knew she was going to crash and experienced the accident in slow motion as she came off the bike head-first, landing on her head and hitting her brow just above the left eyebrow. Her cousins found her lying unconscious with her neck bent in an unnatural position, not moving.
During her unconscious state, Jeanette had a profound out-of-body experience. She found herself descending from a blue sky into what appeared to be a room with a long wooden medieval-style table. Around this table sat several people wearing purple cloaks, with one person at the head of the table who appeared to be in charge. They were discussing whether she should live or die, noting that she was only 15 and perhaps too young to die yet. She had no voice in this discussion and felt that if she descended fully into the room, she wouldn't be able to return. She sensed this was her boundary and fought to get back. The most remarkable aspect of Jeanette's experience was her clear visual perception despite being unconscious. She could see the wooden table, the purple-cloaked figures, and the room's medieval atmosphere with perfect clarity. She was aware that these beings were deciding her fate without acknowledging her presence directly. She understood their discussion about her age and whether she should continue living, though she's unsure if she heard them traditionally or simply knew what was being discussed. The accident resulted in a severe concussion that kept her experiencing symptoms that night. The experience left her with lasting questions about life after death and a moderate increase in her spiritual beliefs. She became more aware of the possibility of an afterlife and developed a more personal spiritual practice rather than formal church attendance. The vividness of the experience, particularly the colors and the scene, remained crystal clear in her memory even decades later.
