Jared was 13 years old when he experienced clinical death while swimming in a pool. As an epileptic, he suffered a Grand Mal seizure while in the water, which caused him to drown. He was clinically dead for several minutes and subsequently went into a 4-day coma. This was a clear life-threatening medical emergency with documented clinical death.
During his near-death experience, Jared describes it as very simple yet profound. He recalls seeing himself lying at the bottom of the pool from an external perspective, observing his body below. He then began to hover or float above the scene. From this vantage point, he could see his mother screaming and watched as someone jumped into the pool to pull his body out. He describes feeling a sudden rush of something that pushed him back into his body, ending the out-of-body experience. The veridical observation in this case involves Jared seeing himself at the bottom of the pool and witnessing the rescue efforts from outside his body. He observed his mother's emotional reaction and saw someone jumping in to save him - events that were occurring while he was clinically dead. These observations were made from a perspective impossible for someone drowning at the bottom of a pool. The experience had lasting effects on Jared's spiritual beliefs. He developed a belief system combining Deist and Buddhist elements, believing in a creator who doesn't interfere with the world of humans. The experience convinced him that the vessel dies but the spirit is reborn, and he came to view traditional concepts of heaven and hell as myths. He no longer fears death and gained a new perspective on the continuity of consciousness.
