At age 5.5, Jane went swimming with her older sister at a lake but didn't realize the water would be too deep for her to touch the bottom. She immediately began drowning when she entered the deep water. During the drowning experience, she felt no pain or discomfort and instead experienced an unusual sense of absolute peace and harmony. She saw plants at the bottom of the lake and beautiful light coming from above, creating a very pleasant and peaceful experience. She describes it as one of the most peaceful moments she ever experienced.
After being pulled from the water and placed on a blanket, Jane had an out-of-body experience where she felt like there were two versions of herself - one lying on the blanket and another observing from above. She describes looking down at herself from this separated perspective. The entire experience was characterized by an overwhelming sense of peace, harmony, and connection with nature that would influence her for the rest of her life. The veridical aspect of this experience includes her accurate observation of lake-bottom plants while drowning, which she could see clearly despite being underwater in distress. She also observed herself from outside her body after being rescued, seeing herself on the blanket from an external vantage point. These observations occurred while she was either drowning or immediately after being pulled from the water in a compromised state. Following this near-death experience, Jane developed a lifelong dedication to nature and communicating its beauty to others. She reports having had three NDEs total in her childhood, all associated with incredible senses of nature, harmony, and peace. Years later, she experienced episodes where she could see the structure of plants and solve complex mathematical problems, suggesting lasting effects from her NDEs.
