James experienced multiple NDEs during and after open heart surgery for a myocardial infarction with 40% damage to the inferior heart wall. His first experience occurred when the breathing apparatus removal went wrong after Monday afternoon surgery. He saw and heard panic-stricken staff talking, then felt encompassing calmness. He saw himself floating submerged in clear liquid with fine cottony-silk strips 2-4 inches long floating around him. His appearance was hairless with baby-like skin shine. His head felt cool like water being rinsed over it before awakening in ICU with staff assisting him. Over the next two days, despite sedation, he remained fully aware of his surroundings. On two separate occasions, he watched from above as staff moved him on the bed, ushered his wife and son away, and attached defibrillators to his chest. He felt no pain and was outside his body looking down at the procedures. He experienced a jolt of pain in his chest and returned to his body - this happened twice with successful defibrillation. He passed through a tube filled with liquid heavier than water, seeing bright white light everywhere. He felt himself traveling through this liquid-filled tube with a sense of oneness. He saw rapidly moving points of light that represented spirits. The experience included feelings of incredible peace, happiness, and unity with the universe. He gained understanding that he was transitioning from the earthly realm to a peaceful spiritual realm. The experiences eliminated his fear of death and increased his compassion toward others. He noted similar experiences at ages 14 and 32 during other life-changing events.
