Jackie F was diagnosed with stage three rectal cancer in May 2012 and underwent rigorous chemotherapy and radiation throughout June and July. The treatment caused her weight to drop to 88 pounds. After her last chemotherapy round, she was hospitalized for a week with high fever, dehydration, and colitis, continuing daily radiation while in isolation. Three days after discharge, while returning to the hospital for routine blood work, she passed out after the procedure and landed on her face and chin. Her husband witnessed her stop breathing completely for several minutes. During this time, Jackie had no awareness of the physical world but experienced profound peace and calm unlike anything she had ever felt before. She was free from all pain and felt she was in an unknown but deeply peaceful place. She heard herself saying "Jesus, I don't want to leave" and knew Jesus was present with her. The peace was so profound that when she faintly heard her husband shouting her name and begging her to wake up, she actively fought against returning, trying to stay in that peaceful realm with Jesus. Eventually his persistent shouting broke through and she realized she had to return because someone was calling her name. When she regained consciousness, she maintained the peaceful, calm state from her experience and felt no fear. She remained in this serene state, deeply affected by where she had just been. The experience strengthened her faith, eliminated her fear of death, and increased her compassion for others. She became more aware that earthly lives are meaningful and significant, though she didn't share the experience with her husband for several days to avoid frightening him while dealing with her cancer treatment.
