Jack M experienced clinical death by drowning after a boat collision on the Ohio River. Another boat struck his at 45 mph, impacting his upper torso and head, causing serious injuries and launching him unconscious into the river. His first sensation was being in an unrecognized environment - a large but finite space like a 50,000-seat oval arena, where he was situated midway and elevated to one side. The boundaries appeared as colorful, nebulous clouds similar to Hubble telescope photos, primarily deep red and orange-yellow against black. The space was brighter at one end, though not extremely bright anywhere. He immediately noted the complete absence of physical sensation - no cold, heat, hunger, thirst, or any discomfort, which he found liberating. Unable to see his own body, he wondered how he could still have vision. He methodically scanned the perimeter, noting the light gradient from right to left. Though he saw no beings, he sensed a masculine presence from the brighter end that conveyed a message without spoken words: "Life isn't complicated, people make it complicated." He accepted this message uncharacteristically without question, thinking "Duh!" The experience ended as suddenly as it began. Throughout, Jack maintained his identity, personality, and analytical processing ability, perceiving it as completely real, not dreamlike. He had no awareness of the accident during the experience. Most notably, he felt distinctly that he was returning to a familiar place, not arriving for the first time. The experience left him with changed priorities, greater appreciation for simple things, and complete absence of fear of death. He noted that the feeling of nirvana was dramatically enhanced by the stunning lack of human discomfort.
