Herman V experienced cardiac arrest during an echocardiogram following a myocardial infarction that had caused 40% damage to his heart's inferior wall. During the procedure, he became tired, closed his eyes, and then heard staff saying "we lost him." He found himself falling into a black abyss with full awareness that he was dead, thinking "so this is what it's like to be dead." He felt regret about leaving his wife alone and not completing important tasks. His fall gradually slowed and stopped as pinpoints of fuzzy light appeared around him, moving rapidly in all directions. He realized a giant being dressed in robes of brown, purple, and gold had caught him. He was in the fetal position, naked and pink like a newborn, lying in the being's arms. When he asked about the moving lights, the being explained they were all spirits going places. Herman experienced complete freedom from pain and an overwhelming, indescribable feeling of peace and love that enveloped him. There was no life review, judgment, or traditional religious imagery - just a powerful sense of being loved and welcomed back "home" to the spiritual realm from which he had come. The being began turning slowly toward a light source in his peripheral vision, and they seemed about to travel toward it when he was suddenly pulled back by the defibrillator. Medical staff welcomed him back, saying they thought they'd lost him. He felt strong regret at returning to physical reality. He was taken for attempted angioplasty but required triple bypass surgery for blockages of 100%, 95%, and 80%. The surgeon gave his family a guarded prognosis. Following surgery, his heart restarted spontaneously without the usual required stimulation, and he was discharged a week later.
