Hazel went for an emergency heart catheterization after experiencing mild chest discomfort and doing poorly on a stress test. Though told it was routine, complications arose when an artery was severed during the procedure because the doctor made the incision in the wrong place. After her doctor friend checked on her and left to tell her husband the good news about her heart, nurses pulled out the groin needle. She felt stabbed and began screaming, thrashing, and grabbing at her groin while nurses restrained her. Her husband ran in as the cardiologist yelled at him about not disclosing blood thinners (which she was not on) and informed him of internal bleeding. Staff literally ran with her to the CAT scan. The pain was incredible as they laid her on the scan board. A nurse began barking at her husband about her religion - her last conscious thought. She then felt very cold and seemed to be heading up an incredibly long, narrow, dark flight of steps similar to stadium stairs. At the top was very bright light from some kind of light source. She sensed someone was there but never saw anyone. She felt swept along toward the light, feeling calm but puzzled, getting closer for about fifteen seconds but never reaching it. She woke in intensive care with a giant clamp on her leg. Her body had sealed the tear itself, avoiding surgery. She thinks about the experience daily and believes God pushed her back because she still had two children to finish raising.
