Grady suffered two cardiac arrests after quadruple bypass surgery due to a reaction to the drug Protamine. The first arrest lasted 7 minutes after he had been taken off life support and closed up. Doctors had to quickly reopen his chest to perform manual heart massage. During this first arrest, he could hear his heart slowing and found himself in a pure white area like a train car. As he was falling, he felt two angel figures at his hips and one behind his head who caught him. The angel behind clearly said "We have you," after which he heard his heartbeat return and was back on the table. Minutes later, he went into cardiac arrest again for 35 minutes while connected to the heart-lung machine. During this second arrest, he was in the purest white environment and watched from above as doctors scrambled to save him. He kept telling them he was still there, not panicked but knowing if they quit he would be gone. He could hear the doctor cursing, nurses frantic, and the anesthesiologist Steve going "nuts." After five days in a drug-induced coma, he woke and asked his surgeon why he kept trying. The surgeon said something kept urging him on. Grady then repeated specific things said during that frantic hour, which the surgeon and nurse verified. He ended up with both vocal cords paralyzed from nerve damage during the heart massage, requiring removal of right side vocal cords. The experience eliminated his fear of death and strengthened his belief in an afterlife and angelic protection.
